Nothing can hold back disabled Veterans: Delta Dental takes part in the DAV Winter Sports Clinic

More than 400 disabled Veterans were joined by 600 dedicated volunteers and 200 sponsors in Snowmass, Colorado, for the 39th National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic—an inspiring celebration of resilience, community and courage.

This world-renowned adaptive sports event, hosted annually by the DAV (Disabled American Veterans) and U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), is far more than a week of skiing, snowboarding, and outdoor adventure. It’s a profound journey of healing, empowerment and reconnection for Veterans from all walks of life.

At Delta Dental, we are honored to support and serve these incredible individuals. As a proud National Sponsor and Mission Partner of the DAV, we're committed to serving those who served. We are dedicated to improving the oral health and overall quality of life for Veterans. No se trata solo del cuidado dental, sino de honrar los sacrificios de aquellos que han dado tanto por nuestro país.

Fueling healing through connection and community

Known as “Miracles on the Mountainside,” the Winter Sports Clinic is more than just an event—it’s a powerful experience defined by camaraderie and mutual understanding. Veterans come not just for the sports, but for the opportunity to reconnect—with themselves, with each other, and with the community that stands behind them.

We were humbled to meet and listen to some of the extraordinary individuals who brought their stories—and their strength—to the slopes:

  • Brenda Reed, a U.S. Army Veteran, sustained a serious foot injury while running in standard-issue combat boots designed for men. The injury ultimately led to an amputation, marking a profound turning point in her life. She reflects on the challenges she faced during and after her time in active-duty service and what this event means to her: “We understand each other—we understand the trauma we went through, and the trauma that brought us here. It’s hard for someone who’s not a Veteran to understand. My time here has made me realize that I can do anything.” Hear Brenda’s powerful story in her own words in our interview.

  • Harold Hack, a U.S. Army Veteran who became paralyzed after his service, shares the mindset that helped him reclaim his sense of purpose and joy: “I could spend every day thinking about the 600 things I can’t do—or I can choose to focus on the 400,000 things I can do. That shift changed everything. I’ve gained a deeper appreciation for the possibilities that still lie ahead.” His resilience is a powerful reminder of the strength within us all.

  • Gary Jezierski, a paralyzed U.S. Coast Guard Veteran shares what he values most about the support he’s received at the Winter Sports Clinic: “It’s not just about the activities or events—it’s about the people. The fact that so many are willing to give their time, effort and energy to make sure we have a good time—it’s the most powerful thing you could ask for. Whether you’re in a chair, an amputee, blind, or living with a traumatic brain injury, having people who are willing to listen to your story and help you enjoy the moment is powerful.” Gary’s experience is a testament to the impact of community, where every act of kindness and support contributes to a shared sense of empowerment and connection.

More than a sponsor—A partner in purpose

At Delta Dental, our role in the Winter Sports Clinic isn’t just about sponsorship—it’s about standing in true solidarity with the Veterans we serve. Our team members are on the ground helping participants use adaptive equipment, sharing in their triumphs, and witnessing firsthand the power of perseverance and human connection.

Through this experience, we are continually reminded that service doesn’t end when the uniform comes off. The journey of healing and support is ongoing—and we’re proud to be part of it. It’s a privilege to support the DAV’s mission of empowering Veterans to lead high-quality lives with respect and dignity. Through our partnership, we’re expanding access to critical oral health care and making a lasting impact on the lives of those who have given so much for our country.

Supporting Veterans isn’t something we do for a week—it’s a year-round commitment. Through our participation in the Veterans Affairs Dental Insurance Program (VADIP), we proudly provide dental coverage to Veterans, their families and CHAMPVA beneficiaries. Oral health is often an overlooked part of overall health, yet it plays a vital role in quality of life, confidence and long-term well-being. VADIP helps ensure that those who’ve served our country have access to the essential dental care they need and deserve. To learn more, visit deltadentalins.com/vadip.
