Tips to help make selling simple

Addressing digital eye strain in the workplace

Screens are unavoidable in most workplaces. Employees spend hours on computers, tablets and phones, and that can lead to digital eye strain. This condition causes eye fatigue, headaches, blurred vision and neck pain, making it harder to stay productive. Fortunately, simple adjustments can help.

What causes digital eye strain?

According to the American Optometric Association (AOA), digital eye strain occurs when the eyes work harder than usual to focus on screens. Factors such as poor lighting, glare, reduced blinking and improper screen positioning all contribute to discomfort. Anyone who spends more than two hours a day looking at a computer or digital screen is at risk for straining their vision.

How to prevent digital eye strain

Employees can take steps to reduce digital eye strain at work and at home. Here's how:

  • Follow the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, employees should look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
  • Adjust screens. Reduce glare, increase contrast and position screens at eye level.
  • Blink more. Staring at screens reduces blinking, which can dry out eyes. Artificial tears can help.
  • Use proper lighting. Bright overhead lights and sunlight can cause glare. Soft, indirect lighting works best.
  • Consider glasses. Anti reflective lenses may help reduce strain, and some people might need a small prescription to help with reading on computer screens. “Even if glasses are not needed for driving, reading or other activities, they still may offer benefits for a minor vision problem that is aggravated by computer use, according to the AOA.
