Partnering with you to help create healthy smiles

How to educate patients and make them partners in oral health

As a health care provider, part of the job is providing guidance to patients so they can maintain their oral health between visits. Your patients might know that going to the dentist is important. But do they know solid oral hygiene habits can help prevent more serious dental – and overall – health problems in the future? You can help encourage them to start taking a more active role in their oral health with a few talking points.

Pointers to get you started

You can start the conversation by letting your patients know that you are partners in their long-term health goals, and that good oral hygiene will help you both accomplish them. Then, remind them of why daily oral health habits are vital:

  • Fewer visits to the dentist: Let’s face it, many patients feel some anxiety about even routine visits. With better home care, there may be less time in the chair.
  • Lower likelihood of gum disease: Your patients might be aware that good oral hygiene can help keep their teeth their cleanest and free of cavities. But do they know that daily brushing and flossing can significantly reduce their risk of gum disease?
  • Preventing gum disease can be a life saver: Numerous studies have found a connection between gum disease and higher rates of heart disease, respiratory problems, mental health conditions and Alzheimer's disease.
  • Diet and exercise matter: Many patients don’t know that smoking, poor diet, excessive alcohol use and lack of exercise can play a factor in their oral health as well as their overall health. These may be sensitive topics for your patients. But they should be aware.
  • Save money: Remind your patients that they can reduce their risk of oral health becoming a significant expense.
  • Worry less: Remind them how confident they feel in their oral health after brushing and flossing.

Empower your patients

Help your patients stay engaged outside the office. Email, text messages and social media are all easily accessible, cost-effective means for providing oral hygiene tips and reminders.

The ADA also provides free informative how-to videos for patients on oral hygiene techniques through their YouTube channel.

Knowledge is power

By empowering your patients with information and guidance, you can help build a positive relationship with them and stronger oral health habits at home.
